Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva – the clear membrane covering the sclera of the eye and membranes on the inside of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis causes redness and swelling and sometimes itching and pain.
What can cause this? There are a number of things:
Viral/bacterial infection. This is sometimes called pinkeye. This nasty is very contagious and spreads through both direct and secondary contact. Handshakes, touching door knobs, using pens and pencils, using keyboards, and touch screens will all transfer this. Treat conjunctivitis of all kinds as if it is contagious!
Irritants. This is an allergic form of pinkeye/conjunctivitis. It’s not contagious, but you can’t tell that! Again, treat it like it’s contagious! Irritants triggering allergic response can be caused by seasonal pollens, danders, cosmetic, perfumes, and chemical contact can all cause it. Be sure to treat allergies if you see that as a driving cause of conjunctivitis.
Underlying disease. There are many types of disease and even medications that might cause conjunctivitis. You will need to treat that too.
Treatment with Master Tung points includes these points. I recommend you identify the affected side and then needle the contralateral side. So if the right eye is affected, needle the left foot and vice versa. If both sides are affected, needle the right side for women and the left side for men.
Right side: Master Tung's Guang Ming, Huo Ying, Huo Zhu
Other: Bleed Er Jian
Point Discussion
Master Tung's Guang Ming point overlaps Kidney 7. This points has a direct effect on the eyes, addressing both dry eyes and eyes that are too wet. Because Huo Ying and Huo Zhu are Master Tung’s Liver 2 and Liver 3, and because the Lvier channel opens to the eyes, these points have a great effect on eye problems as well.
Consider using a guide point! Master Tung acupuncture often uses guide points to direct Qi to the desired area. You could use Du 20 for this go guide energy to the head, for instance. The Taiyang and Yintang points would work too, as would the Yu Yao or Bladder 2 points.
Bleeding Er Jian, the apex of the ear, is like freakin’ magic for conjunctivitis, migraines, and all kinds of heat rising to the head. Fold the ear in half vertically to find the center point at the top of the earYou have to massage it somewhat vigorously to bring blood up to the point – do it until the ear turns pink. Immediately pinch and prick to bleed. Use a cotton ball moistened with alcohol to swipe the point if the bleeding stops too early. Squeeze it to get drops of blood out. No more than 10.
